Position Summary



The Lead Aerospace Engineer directs the design, development, testing, and integration of scientific instrumentation for multiple space missions, in conformance with NASA practices for flight hardware. Responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising the work of technical engineering and support team engaged in design, construction, and testing of space flight systems. Responsible for delivering instruments on schedule and in conformance with cost guidelines. Represents the UCLA Experimental Space Physics group at meetings with extramural funding agency authorities concerning engineering design considerations and deliverables, at professional conferences, and in collaborations with other space partners. Collaborates with UCLA scientists to develop proposals for new space missions and their instrumentation, and is responsible for designing new technology for present and future mission opportunities. Incumbent operates independently to identify and prioritize project requirements and objectives, develop and implement solutions, with minimal supervision by Principal Investigators.

Qualifications



  • 1. Advanced knowledge of computers and programming: Machine Code, BAL, FORTH, Basic, C, TCP-IP, HTML, digital signal processor (DSP), Windows, MS Office. (Required)
  • 2. Advanced knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems and their interfaces. Requires deep knowledge of thermal design, and should be familiar with computer-aided tools for designing and simulating such systems. (Required)
  • 3. Demonstrated project management skills to direct and oversee all phases of instrument development, implementation, testing, and integration for several multi-million-dollar space projects. (Required)
  • 4. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Thorough understanding of project priorities and the ability to develop plans that will achieve stated goals on schedule, anticipate problems, and develop innovative solutions to correct or prevent obstacles (Required)
  • 5. Demonstrated supervisory skills to manage team of technical staff, including defining needs and position requirements, hiring, training, delegating work assignments, fostering teamwork and good morale, evaluating performance, and tracking corrective action. (Required)
  • 6. High level communication skills to represent the magnetometry engineering group with outside vendors and funding agencies, to present at external reviews, negotiate terms and requirements, and provide feedback to other space partners, etc. (Required)
  • 7. Extensive knowledge of engineering design tools for instrument design, and precision magnetometer design. Ability to produce drawings and schematics with appropriate specifications. (Required)
  • 8. Advanced understanding of spacecraft systems and integration; advanced knowledge of NASA practices for flight hardware, and space flight procurement. (Required)
  • 9. Advanced skill in analog and digital design and test proficiency. Ability to diagnose and repair digital and analog electronic systems. (Required)
  • 10. Working knowledge of import/export laws and restriction and ITAR issues. (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Bachelor's Degree In electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
