Fire Protection Engineer

Accountability

Reports directly to the Department Manager, Fire Protection Program

Scope of Responsibilities

The Fire Protection Engineer, will support the Argonne Fire Protection Program by performing fire protection assessments for Argonne buildings and systems, performing fire barrier and fire protection system inspections and provide support for the existing fire system testing, and maintenance program. They may also perform hazards analysis of experimental work and provide engineering support for new construction and rehabilitation projects at Argonne.

Specific Duties

* Performs functions thru the Fire Protection Department as a staff engineer.

* Develops fire hazard analyses (FHA) and facility fire protection assessments per DOE Order 420.1C and DOE-STD-1066-2023.

* Develops or reviews designs for fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and fire barriers.

* Serving as a lead engineer for fire protection construction projects as directed by the Fire Protection Program Manager to ensure compliance with Department of Energy (DOE), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and facility specific requirements.

* Coordinating with Argonne Project Management Office (PMO) staff to ensure successful completion of fire protection projects.

* Performing visual inspections of fire protection systems to identify degradation or performance issues.

* Evaluating fire protection systems and components against existing design requirements to verify compliance.

* Reviewing and revising inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with NFPA codes and standards and DOE requirements.

Requirements

* Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or a related engineering or science field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a fire protection engineering role.

* Demonstrated skill and knowledge of fire protection systems (including hydraulics, suppression, alarm, detection and barrier systems), engineering, principles, practices, codes including but not limited to NFPA and other applicable fire protection, life safety, and building codes commensurate with their level of experience.

* Knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations; DOE orders, standards, and guidance documents; and other applicable directives.

* Demonstrated experience identifying fire hazards and their required preventative and mitigative engineering and/or administrative controls.

* Ability to develop alternative and/or performance-based solutions to complex problems.

* Skill in preparing engineering and design documents for fire protection components and systems.

* Ability to perform duties with a customer service focus

* Skill in independently handling a full workload that involves complex regulations, interpreting these regulations, establishing priorities, and maintaining good working relationships.

* Demonstrated oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, organization and time management skills.

* Ability to understand interrelationships of multiple fire protection systems to identify cross-system requirements and affects.

* Knowledge in use of fire protection monitoring and testing equipment.

* Demonstrated experience with evaluating new and existing facilities against established or code driven design requirements and identifying and evaluating deficiencies, determining and prioritizing appropriate corrective measures, and/or identifying fire protection equivalencies or appropriate alternatives for compliance.

* Knowledge of the Highly Protected Risk (HPR) philosophy, model building codes, Factory Mutual Data Sheets, and other applicable codes and standards is required for this position.

* Registration as a professional engineer (fire protection) is highly desirable.

* National Fire Protection Association Certified Fire Protection Specialist or a Professional Engineering license is desirable.

* Knowledge, skills, and experience, including using features in editing documents, with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Mail and Calendar) and Adobe Acrobat
