Department Summary


The Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences is an academic unit within the UCLA Division of Physical Sciences.

Position Summary



The NEO Surveyor survey scientist's high-level responsibilities include:

• Assist the Principal Investigator and Science Team in developing the NEO Surveyor survey plan, which determines where the Observatory points as a function of time.

• Interface with the NEO Surveyor Science Data System (NSDS) archive to access NEO Surveyor image and catalog data, and work with the NSDS team to maximize the ability to link individual NEO Surveyor detections of small body candidates.

• Interface with the NEO Surveyor mission system team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Astrophysics and Space Physics (LASP), and ensure that the teams at JPL and LASP produce uplink sequences that match the desired survey plan.

• Interface with the Minor Planet Center to ensure that the survey plan produces the best possible orbits for small body candidates detected by NEO Surveyor.

Qualifications



  • 3+ years Research experience in planetary astrophysics, solar system bodies, exoplanets (Required)
  • 1+ years Research experience in celestial mechanics and/or small body population modeling (Preferred)
  • 3+ years Python or equiv. language programming (Required)
  • 3+ years Working with large technical teams (Preferred)
  • Strong Python programming skills (Required)
  • Ability to interpret and manipulate copious amounts of complex technical information and data (Required)
  • Able to represent the interests of the Principal Investigator in technical meetings across the project as the project goes through development and post launch (Required)
  • Able to provide the Principal Investigator with recommendations on technical approaches that will meet budget and schedule objectives (Required)
  • Proven record of successful research and strong communications skills (Required)
  • Proven record of successful technical achievements with large technical team (Required)
  • Proven record of successful technical leadership in an official or non-official capacity (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • PhD Planetary science, computer science, math, physics, astronomy or related discipline, or equivalent experience/training (Required)
